THE PRESENT GENERATION
Contemporary practices in theatre and performance

International workshops of interdisciplinary training

Pan|Palazzo delle Arti Napoli
26 June - 1 July 2006

The Present Generation is a project of international workshops which offer a course of interdisciplinary training through theatre, writing, visual arts, movement and original techniques of “drifting” and site-specific performance.
Hosted by PAN | Palazzo delle Arti Napoli, the workshops are for actors, performers, playwrights, directors, performing arts students and all individuals with a specific interest in performance.
The work programme is divided into four phases with a final performance open to the public, an event devised collectively by participants and tutors from the material generated during the workshops.

The Present Generation originated through the cooperation of Italian and British artists, whose research and creative processes aim to investigate, through innovative practices, the borders between art forms and the possibility of changing ordinary points of view, subverting habitual perceptions, generating unusual ways of inhabiting particular sites, and recounting the history of which they are testimony.

PAN | Palazzo delle Arti, with its activities as a centre of documentation, exhibition and creation of contemporary art, and as a site of historical and artistic interest linked to its identity as Palazzo Roccella (a Seventeenth century aristocratic Neapolitan mansion) will become during the course of the week the natural creative residence of the project, as well as a source of thematic, imaginative and visual inspiration for the workshops.

Phase 1 26/6/06

led by Bianca Mastrominico, Organic Theatre, UK

Inspired by the varying fortunes of the aristocratic Carafa family, founders of Palazzo Roccella, participants will adopt a historical character and will develop it into a personal alter ego through improvisations, use of objects, dramaturgy and creative writing sessions, with which they can then walk and inhabit the Palazzo delle Arti.

Phase 2 27/6/06

led by John Dean, Organic Theatre, UK

Participants will acquire and develop an awareness of their own imaginative, perceptive and physical reactions to the architecture of PAN, exploring how the spaces (entrances, stairways, exhibition rooms, terraces) and their atmospheres can guide movement and induce organic actions, increasingly sensitive to the surrounding environment.

Phase 3 28-29/6/06
led by Phil Smith, Wrights & Sites, UK

Through original site specific performance practice and techniques of creative exploration, participants will celebrate a new culture of walking through artistic sites. Experimental walks (mis-guides) both outside and inside the building, will create a temporal mapping which recognises the mutating, sensorial, personal and mythogeographical experience of PAN.

Phase 4 30/6/06

led by Dr.Jerri Daboo, University of Exeter, UK

Starting from an investigation of movement and psychophysical responses to specific works of art exhibited at PAN, participants will explore a new way of seeing and reading the works, as well as their relationship to the landscape of the building.

Final Phase 1/7/06

The material generated during the previous phases will be drawn together in a collective creation led by the tutors, which will allow each participant to implement their experience of the practices through a final performance event open to the public.
