Odin Teatret UK tour 2005 - 21st October / 6th November 2005
Building on a successful residency in the South West with Julia Varley and Eugenio Barba in May 2004, Organic Theatre has organised a national tour by the Odin Teatret ensemble, in collaboration with Rose Bruford College, The Nightingale Theatre (Brighton), University of Plymouth, Exeter Phoenix, Tobacco Factory, University of Bristol, Goldsmiths College - University of London, Nuffield Theatre - University of Lancaster, University of Manchester and Alsager Arts Centre - Manchester Metropolitan University. The tour has been supported by Arts Council England (South West) and Holstebro Council (Denmark).
Odin Teatret, which this year has celebrated its 40th anniversary, is one of the world’s most revolutionary theatre companies and innovative research institutes.
It was founded in Oslo, Norway, in 1964 when Eugenio Barba gathered together a group of would-be actors who had been rejected by the State Theatre School.
From the very beginning, Odin Teatret has concentrated on the training of the actor and the creation of productions which have often taken up to two years to prepare.
In the early sixties there were no other such groups in Europe and this condition of autodidactism and autonomy from the theatrical mainstream has characterised Odin Teatret history to the present day.
In 1966 the group established its base in Holstebro, Denmark as the Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium. Within this framework, it developed a wide variety of local, national and international activities: courses, seminars, meetings, conferences, festivals and tours.
Its collaborators come from different countries and perform regularly in Europe, the Far and Middle East and North and South America. This experience of migration and journeying has been fundamental to both the work and the philosophy of the group.
